THE ROSES OF THE YEAR 2022-23 / HANKY PANKY ROSE: PHOTOS AND WATERCOLOUR FROM BEESTON-NOTTINGHAM (UK)

THE ROSES OF THE YEAR 2022/23

Author: Marysia Zipser, Beeston-Nottingham, UK

Here is my watercolour attempt referenced to a Hanky Panky rose photo print I took five years ago in my garden.  I’ve only had five short watercolour classes from Beeston watercolourist and teacher Anjana Cawdell.  Also I attach two other photos taken in my garden today.

Thank you, Marysia Zipser, Beeston-Nottingham, UK

The Hanky Panky story

The Hanky Panky rose was bred in 2000 in California by rose hybridizer Tom Carruth for Weeks Roses. From then onwards it was distributed to worldwide rose growers and then to garden centres, where my Mum first bought it at Wheatcrofts garden centre (now Notcutts) at Edwalton, Nottingham in 2006/7.

This rose means so much to me and meant so much to my dear Mum, from whose garden I transplanted it to my garden after she passed in late 2011. I moved to my little house and garden 10 years ago in Beeston-Nottingham and Hanky Panky has flourished here ever since, so my Mum is always here to say hello and continue her conversations with me, ‘Let’s see how Hanky Panky is doing today!’ and we’d have giggles and smiles, and a cup of tea!

Hanky Panky means in English ” behaviour, in particular sexual or legally dubious behaviour, considered improper but not seriously so.” ! It implies ‘naughtiness’ to me like in the era of Victorian music halls.

In early 2021, I commissioned our ACT’s new rose logo to be designed and so it is based on this particular rose, because of its resilience and constant re-flowering from May through to end November.  It  changes its colours from red/white early buds to creamy whites and shades of pinks as it unfurls in its later stages.  So it is like a metaphor of a journey across the seas to countries far away adapting to each landscape.   A survival of resilience.

As announced, the Rose of the Year 2022/23 initiative was dedicated to the memory of Queen Elizabeth II, a great admirer of roses. The official hymn is also dedicated to the late sovereign, the “Rose Theme”, composed by the English singer and musician Jeanie Barton and performed by the I.C. “Cassano-De Renzio” of Bitonto (Bari, Italy).

The initiative aims to invite people of all ages to express their creativity and their love for the beauty of nature, especially for the rose, the “queen of flowers”. Participation is open to all: individuals, groups, associations and schools. What must be done to participate in “The Roses of the Year”? It is necessary to take photos of everything that tells the world and the dimension of a rose, seen and represented in all its aspects, varieties and colors. You can participate by photographing roses and gardens, or drawings, paintings, mosaics and frescoes all dedicated exclusively to the queen of flowers. The images received will find their place online in a creativity gallery. A final public event is not excluded. They will be selected for a major online exhibition that will develop into a video and a permanent photo gallery.
